Course Directors
Professor Reena Sidhu
Professor Reena Sidhu is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and an Honorary Professor with the University of Sheffield. Her main area of interest is the small bowel and she completed a clinical MD with the University of Sheffield on modern modalities of investigation of the small bowel. She is currently the lead for the tertiary double balloon enteroscopy service at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and co-runs one of the biggest Capsule Endoscopy services in Europe. Both of these services are established regional services which have won national awards. She runs an international capsule endoscopy course for doctors and nurses. She carries out clinical research related to the small bowel and continues to publish actively in this field. She has research fellows under her banner.
She is regularly invited to speak at national and international meetings. She has led a curriculum for SBCE & Device Assisted Enteroscopy as part of her role in the ESGE curricula group She was awarded the Hopkins Endoscopy Prize by the BSG in 2012, the first female gastroenterologist to have ever won this. She is the first author of the British Society of Gastroenterology guidelines on capsule endoscopy and enteroscopy, published in 2008 and is also a co-author on the 2015 ESGE guidelines on small bowel endoscopy. She is the first author of the BSG Sedation Guidelines 2024 and has co-led the ESGE Sedation Guidelines. She is the current leader for the ESGE Small Bowel Qic group and is leading the standardisation in reporting for SB endoscopy She was previously BSG Education Chair. During her tenure as the BSG Education web editor, she successfully curated an entire new platform for online Education for the BSG.
Dr David Tai
Dr David Tai is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Clinical Lead for Endoscopy at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. He is an interventional endoscopist with a sub specialist interest in small bowel endoscopy. He described the training pathway for small bowel capsule endoscopy in the UK and is the JAG training lead for DAE.
Professor Mark McAlindon
Professor Mark McAlindon is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and member of the Sheffield Small Bowel Service, the largest in the UK. The service has been recognized by awards from the BMJ, Medipex, Health Service Journal and the Movetis Magic award. He is the national Quality Improvement lead for small bowel endoscopy and previous Hopkins Endoscopy prize recipient. He has co-directed capsule endoscopy training courses since 2005. He contributed to the BSG and ESGE small bowel endoscopy guidelines and quality standards, the Video Capsule Endoscopy Reference Guide and Atlas (Springer 2014) and co-edited the Handbook of Capsule Endoscopy (Springer 2014). Current research interests include the control of capsule endoscopy in the upper GI tract using patient positional change, handheld external magnets and a joystick-controlled robot magnet, the first system operational outside of China.
Faculty
Dr Amit Chattree
Consultant Gastroenterologist at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. He is an interventional endoscopist with an subspecialty interest in small bowel medicine and endoscopy. He undertakes the full range of capsule endoscopy modalities and performs both single and double balloon enteroscopy. He leads the regional capsule endoscopy and device assisted enteroscopy service for the North East and Cumbria and is heavily involved in capsule endoscopy research both nationally and internationally.
He is the lead author for the BSG Large Polyp Guidelines and was given a BSG award in 2015 for his research work. He is heavily involved in training and mentoring in both capsule endoscopy and device assisted enteroscopy. He is a national pathway lead for small bowel capsule endoscopy certification and a national assessor for small bowel endoscopy. He is a member of the IRCAD international endoscopy training faculty and is also the course director for the Lumley Castle European Capsule Endoscopy Course.
Dr Melissa Hale
Dr Melissa Hale was appointed as a consultant gastroenterologist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in 2016. She has an interest in inflammatory bowel disease and capsule endoscopy. Qualifying from the University of Sheffield in 2006, she was subsequently appointed as a clinical research fellow under the supervision of Professor Mark McAlindon in 2013. This culminated in an MD from the University of Sheffield in 2016 for her work on upper gastrointestinal capsule endoscopy, for which she won a British Society of Gastroenterology Endoscopy research award. She currently provides capsule endoscopy services for the award winning regional centre at STH together with a tertiary IBD service. As a capsule endoscopy expert, she has been an invited speaker at national meetings and also teaches on a number of training courses, including the European Capsule Endoscopy Course and the Lumley Capsule Endoscopy Course. She is a registered endoscopy trainer and teaches on JAG approved endoscopy courses. Her current research interests centre around her work within inflammatory bowel disease and endoscopy

Dr Tony Blakeborough
GI Radiologist, originally trained in Leeds and has been a Consultant in Sheffield for over 20 years. He sits on the upper and lower GI cancer MDT weekly. He has a special interest in the small bowel and is an integral member of the small bowel team at Sheffield Hospitals.
Professor David Sanders
Professor David S Sanders works in Sheffield, United Kingdom. He has published >500 peer reviewed papers (H-score > 90). He is internationally recognised for his work in coeliac disease and gluten related disorders. His other areas of interest are small bowel endoscopy, gastrostomy feeding, IBS and GI Bleeding.

Dr Xavier Dray
European Capsule Endoscopy Course Programme 2026 FINALPr Xavier Dray is a MD trained in gastroenterology and Hepatology in Paris. He holds a PhD degree after a research period at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA.
He his now head of the Centre for Digestive Endoscopy at Sorbonne University, Saint-Antoine Hospital, in the Greater Paris University Hospitals (APHP).
His research focus on artificiel intelligence for capsule endoscopy. He holds several patents on the matter. He is a co-founder and share-holder of Augmented Endoscopy, a company that has recently launched a CE-marked, AI-based, on-line service for pre-reading of small bowel capsules.
Xavier Dray is also the past, inaugural president of the international CApsule endoscopy REsearch (iCARE) group, that now gathers more than 170 researchers from 21 countries.
Dr Jamie Wild
Jamie is a Consultant Sonographer working at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (STH). With the support of a collaborative Radiology team, he has previously worked to establish two new specialist services at STH: contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) for indeterminate renal lesions and elastography of the liver. He is currently working in close partnership with the gastroenterology team to develop a dedicated intestinal ultrasound service for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) – an area of rapidly growing clinical relevance.
Jamie sits on the ultrasound advisory group with the College of Radiographers (CoR), as well as being a trained expert witness with the CoR. He is an active contributor to sonography education nationally, delivering guest lectures across multiple universities, and has published articles in peer-reviewed journals.
Dr Bruno Rosa
Dr. Bruno Rosa is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Hospital da Senhora da Oliveira – Guimarães, Portugal, with expertise in capsule endoscopy and small bowel disorders. He is current President of the Portuguese Small Bowel Study Group (GEPID) and serves on the Board of the Portuguese Society of Gastroenterology. Dr. Rosa is Coordinator of the International Capsule Endoscopy Training Program at the University of Minho, Braga – Portugal. He has authored more than 90 PubMed-indexed publications and contributed to several European guidelines and consensus statements in capsule endoscopy and enteroscopy. His academic and clinical work focuses on advancing diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, particularly pan-enteric capsule endoscopy and AI applications in gastrointestinal imaging.
Vicky Thurston
Victoria Thurston qualified as a nurse in 2009. She worked as an endoscopy nurse first which she really enjoyed and then as a nurse on the gastro clinical investigation unit. She became a capsule endoscopy nurse specialist in 2015 and still works on the investigation unit in a dual role.
Dr. Nicoletta Nandi
Dr. Nicoletta Nandi is a clinical fellow at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, working under the supervision of Professor Reena Sidhu. She completed her gastroenterology training and earned a PhD in clinical research on coeliac disease and endoscopy at the University of Milan. Her clinical and research interests include endoscopy, in particular enteroscopy and capsule endoscopy, as well as small bowel diseases.
