Sheffield Consultant Gastroenterologist Recognized with Prestigious Rome Foundation Academic Fellowship
Dr Imran Aziz keeps bringing the awards in!
Dr Aziz was awarded the Rome Foundation Academic Fellowship in May 2025.
The Rome Foundation is an independent organization comprising a committee of world-renowned experts dedicated to supporting the creation of scientific data and educational information to assist people living with conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
The awards ceremony, held in the United States, acknowledged Dr Aziz as a key opinion leader within the field, having contributed significantly to the services of the Rome Foundation and achieved international recognition for his work. This is on the back of Dr Aziz already being the recipient of the UEG Rising star award in 2021.
We are delighted to introduce you to Dr Mo Abdelrahim
Mo is a Consultant Interventional Endoscopist whose remit it is to expand our existing Endo-Surgery Services.
Here is Mo’s repertoire: EMR, ESD, RFA, POEM, EFTR. More awards than letters in his name! BSG UKBOR Award 2023, BSG Barbers’ Company award for trainees in Gastroenterology 2023, ESGE Innovation of The Year Award 2022, ESGE-Medtronic AI Research Award 2021, ESGE Research Champions Awards 2021 & the BSG Gut Award 2021.
So, if you are looking for advice on complex endoscopic resection or third space endoscopy cases, or perhaps to refer a case, you know who to contact. Finally, if you are looking for an advanced endoscopic fellowship, travel no further than South Yorkshire!

Our very own Professor Mark McAlindon the UK pioneer of capsule endoscopy!
Professor McAlindon is a Consultant Gastroenterologist in Sheffield. He has clinical, research and educational interests in capsule endoscopy, contributing to the development of a service which has received Movetis, Health Service Journal, Medipex, BMJ and Royal College of Physicians awards and for which he was awarded the BSG Hopkins Endoscopy prize.
Current research includes studies of small and large bowel and magnet robot-controlled upper GI capsule endoscopy. He has over 150 research publications in peer-reviewed journals, written several book chapters, contributed to national and international guidelines and co-edited the Handbook of Capsule Endoscopy (Springer, 2016).
He was a member of both BSG Small Bowel and Nutrition and Endoscopy Committees, the national Quality Improvement Lead for Small Bowel Endoscopy and represented the UK on the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Small Bowel Endoscopy Research Group. Most recently, he was a member of the NHSE advisory board overseeing the roll out of the colon capsule endoscopy pilot across England, the outcomes of which were recently published (https://doi.org/10.1111/apt.70046).

Please note: The venue is now called Crowne Plaza Royal Victoria (previously Holiday Inn).
The venue – postcode S1 2AU – is easily accessible (just off the A57 on the outskirts of Sheffield City Centre, thus avoiding traffic).
This is very close to the Sheffield train station so jumping on a train from where you are brings you to within a 5 minute taxi drive or 15 minute walk to the venue. Parking is free of charge.
Turn right when you see the Metropolitan Hotel and bear left.
Continue under the archway which says “Royal Victoria”
Carry on up the driveway to the car park straight ahead.
The Sheffield Royal Victoria
The Sheffield Victoria Railway used to terminate where the meeting is being held. Thus passengers disembarked and saw the Royal Victoria Hotel.
As a result the war memorial is situated here – if you have a moment please have a look.
